Maine warming centers open this weekend as outages persist

More than 175,000 were without power across Maine Friday night due to a nor'easter; some outages could last through early next week, officials said.

MAINE, USA — With more than 175,000 in Maine without power as of 7 p.m. Friday due to a nor'easter, some warming centers will remain open through the weekend and possibly longer.

Some of the centers have places where people can charge devices, use restrooms, and get a meal, in addition to having a warm place to stay.

As of 7:06 p.m. Friday, there were 174,965 Central Maine Power customers without power, most in York and Cumberland counties. As of 7:15 p.m., there were 1,469 Versant customers without power, most in Hancock County.

A CMP official said most people should get power back by Sunday and full restoration is expected early next week. Versant said it anticipated fixing most of the outages by 10 p.m. Friday,  "with the exception of customers located in remote areas such as camps, camp roads and islands."

The Maine Emergency Management Agency is updating a list of official warming centers. At a warming center in Windham, people said they were glad to be able to charge their phones and take a hot shower. Some have been without power since early Thursday and haven't had running water because their wells have electric pumps.
