Dozens of crashes, near misses on Maine roads during nor'easter

There were 46 crashes and slide-offs on Maine highways before noon, and a police officer in Sanford had a close call with a falling tree.

MAINE, USA — A nor'easter caused dozens of crashes, slide-offs, and close calls on roads across Maine Wednesday night and Thursday.

There were 46 instances and counting of crashes and slide-offs on state highways since the storm started Wednesday night, state police said Thursday afternoon. No major injuries were reported.

Police ordered speed limits reduced to 45 mph on parts of major highways like Interstate 95, where a vehicle flipped over near Scarborough. In Windham, a driver trying to pass a downed tree in the road struck a cruiser, officials said. In Sanford, a police officer's dash cam caught a falling tree nearly striking their cruiser:

There is still a lot of snow in the trees. Travel is risky! This officer just missed a falling tree while on patrol. Please avoid travel if possible. Today is a board game type of day. Maybe some Monopoly? Just pass go and collect $200.

Authorities urged drivers to stay off the road if possible. The storm is expected to continue dropping snow and rain through Friday, according to the latest forecast.

"If you do not need to travel to please stay off the roads," state police said in a statement. "If you do please use extreme caution, drive slow and leave plenty of room between you and the car ahead of you."
