Head-on crash in New Gloucester leaves two people injured

Police say distracted driving played a role in the crash

NEW GLOUCESTER, Maine — Officials with the Cumberland County Sheriff's Office and the New Gloucester Fire and EMS responded to the area of 396 North Pownal Road at about 8:00 p.m. Friday night for a report of a head-on vehicle crash.

In a release, police said 20-year-old Nicholas Orr of Tophsam was driving a 2010 Subaru Legacy when he crossed the center line on a sharp curve and went into the oncoming lane.

Coming in the opposite direction was 60-year-old Cheryl Hall of Durham, who was driving a 2008 Hyundai. She was hit head-on by Orr's car.

Officials said Hall was taken to CMMC with serious, but non-life threatening injuries. Orr was also taken as a precautionary measure, but was not seriously hurt. Both vehicles sustained significant damage.

The crash is under investigation by the Cumberland County Sheriff's Office. Officials said distracted driving and failure to maintain control of a vehicle played a role in the cause of the crash. But, officials said speed and alcohol do not appear to be factors in the crash at this time.

North Pownal Road was closed for several hours Friday night.
