'Love and community': Downeast Horizons hosts annual autism walk-a-thon

Downeast Horizons, a Maine nonprofit that assists and supports individuals with developmental disabilities, raised money for its work.

ELLSWORTH, Maine — Downtown Ellsworth was filled with excitement Tuesday morning, as nearly 200 people participated in Downeast Horizons' annual Autism Awareness Walk-a-Thon.

Community members gathered in Knowlton Park and walked roughly one mile through the downtown area to raise money and awareness.

"As a person with autism like myself, I think it was one of those things that ... just seeing the love and community here makes me feel hopeful," walk participant Richard Peterson said.

Downeast Horizons is a Maine nonprofit that assists and supports individuals with developmental disabilities.

"One hundred and fifty to 200 people who are here today to show their community that autism is something that is out there and something people can be proud of," Downeast Horizons' Executive Director Tony Zambrano said.

According to Downeast Horizons staff, the nonprofit raised $3,810 from the walk-a-thon. Zambrano said the donations will go to fund the group's autism resource library, as well as early intervention public service announcements, social groups, and activities.

"I'm very excited. I have autism myself and I've been doing this walk since I was sixteen," Jonathan Morrison said.

"Feels good in my heart," Doug Dow said. "People beep their horns."

Danielle Williams, who has two sons with autism who benefit from the services offered by Downeast Horizons, took part in the walk and was excited to see the turnout.

"It's a great supportive community and it's fantastic to see everyone out here supporting something that means a lot to all of the families, especially to our family," Williams said.
