Crews respond to structure fire in Bangor

Firefighters were called to a residence on Wiley Street on Saturday.

BANGOR, Maine — A fire destroyed the home of two older Mainers in Bangor on Saturday.

The city's assistant fire chief said they got the call around 2:30 p.m. of a fire at a home at the corner of Ohio Street and Wiley Street.

He said when they arrived, they did not hear any smoke detectors going off and had to alert the two people, who are in their 70s,  to evacuate the home. They were not injured. The Red Cross is helping the two people with lodging.

He said the fire started in the garage and extended into the house, causing damage to both stories. The home is no longer inhabitable.

The assistant chief said the home did not have any sprinklers.

The fire marshal's office is investigating the exact cause.
