Portland man leads police on hour-long chase; now faces charges in connection with domestic violence incident

Fakhareldin Adam is charged with criminal threatening with a dangerous weapon, kidnapping, robbery, domestic violence assault, and refusal to submit to arrest.

PORTLAND, Maine — The Portland Police Department said a 22-year-old resident of the city was arrested Wednesday after being tracked for about an hour by officers and a South Portland Police K-9 unit.

Fakhareldin Adam is now charged with criminal threatening with a dangerous weapon, kidnapping, robbery, domestic violence assault, and refusal to submit to arrest or detention.

Adam is accused of assaulting his ex-girlfriend and then forcing her to withdraw money from her bank account at the Bank of America on Auburn Street.

Police say the victim told an employee what had happened and that Adam was armed.

When officers arrived they say Adam took off.

Portland Police Lt. Robert Martin says officers tracked him for about an hour through numerous backyards, trials and roadways.

"We received numerous help from citizens alerting officers who were a scene when they had seen him run and assisted us with replacing and recasting the dog to pick up the track again."

Lt. Martin says Adam was eventually seen crossing Ocean Avenue.

He was taken into custody after a brief foot chase by two plain clothes officers who were guarding the perimeter police had set up.

"It was a very dangerous situation that went on for an hour. It put our officers at risk, the citizens at risk too and we utilized a lot of resources for a long period of time to take him into custody. We're glad it finally ended the way that it did, that no one was hurt."
