TD Beach to Beacon 10K to benefit Preble Street Teen Services this year

"They provide meals, clothing, and protection intervention. It seems to be an obvious choice as our race beneficiary."

CAPE ELIZABETH, Maine — The annual TD Beach to Beacon 10K Road Race is gearing up for another exciting event, and this year, all the bibs for runners have already been claimed.

Registrations and runner contributions have raised close to $50,000 for this year's beneficiary, Preble Street Teen Services, an organization dedicated to supporting homeless youth.

"Folks don't recognize that there are youth that are experiencing homelessness in our communities," Ali Lovejoy, vice president of admission advancement at Preble Street, said.

With over 300 youth served statewide annually, Preble Street Teen Services operates as an overnight shelter, providing crucial support to vulnerable young individuals.

"We have 28 beds for youth who are experiencing homelessness. That's up from 24. During COVID-19 pandemic, we expanded to 28 beds," Lovejoy explained.

Celebrating its 50th anniversary, Preble Street had compelling reasons to apply as this year's Beach to Beacon beneficiary.

"We have to raise upwards of a million dollars each year to continue operating all the services we offer to youth experiencing homelessness or at risk of homelessness," Lovejoy said.

David Backer, president of the race, highlighted the significance of selecting Preble Street Teen Services from a pool of 20 deserving organizations.

"Preble Street Teen Services is addressing an obvious and overwhelming need to provide safety to teens who have left home voluntarily or have been pushed out of an abusive home setting," Backer said. "They provide meals, clothing, protection, intervention. It seems to be an obvious choice as our race beneficiary."

In addition to the funds raised through the race, Preble Street Teen Services will receive an additional check of $30,000 from TD Bank. The collaboration aims to amplify the impact of their collective efforts in supporting homeless youth.

More than 6,000 runners are expected to cross the finish line at Portland Headlight, rallying in support of Preble Street's charitable mission.

For those interested in contributing further, registration for volunteer opportunities on race day opens on May 1. The race organizers aim to recruit at least 800 volunteers to ensure the smooth running of the event.
