PORTLAND (NEWS CENTER Maine) -- Maine DOT crews were expected to conduct emergency repair work for several hours Tuesday on a joint on the traveling surface of an I-295 bridge in Portland.

Maine DOT Press Secretary Ted Talbot announced that at 12:30 p.m. Tuesday, Nov. 20, crews would perform the repairs. He said traffic would be affected near exit 6B southbound.

Talbot said the emergency repairs would take approximately four hours to complete.

"It broke apart," Talbot said. "We're not sure what caused it."

Talbot said they may have to go back and do the other side next week.

"It would be a concern for motorists to continue to travel over that joint. Out of safety concerns we’re necessitating this closure" he said.

Talbot did not immediately know how old the bridge was or when it was last inspected. He said weather or general wear-and-tear can cause these types of breaks.
