Fort Kent schools delay or close after report of gunfire in area, police say

MSAD 27 includes Fort Kent Elementary School, Valley Rivers Middle School, and Community High School.

FORT KENT, Maine — Classes for students in MSAD 27 were delayed Wednesday due to gunfire near the district's three schools.

The incident involved "the discharge of a firearm in the vicinity of Pleasant St. and all 3 schools," Fort Kent police said in a social media post Wednesday.

The school district includes Fort Kent Elementary School, Valley Rivers Middle School, and Community High School. The University of Maine at Fort Kent is also located in that area. 

Police added that it appears to be an isolated incident and there is no threat to the public.

MSAD 27 schools resumed classes at 10 a.m.

The UMFK closed during the incident and announced that it would stay closed for the remainder of the day Wednesday, and the campus would reopen May 9, according to an alert on their school website.
