Man in custody after shots fired in Unity, sheriff's office says

Multiple law enforcement agencies responded Monday afternoon, focused in an area near the intersection of Waterville Road and Jacy Place.

UNITY, Maine — A man is in custody after numerous law enforcement agencies responded to a report of shots fired in Unity on Monday.

Just after 1 p.m., the Waldo County Regional Communications Center was notified of a Maine Forest Ranger seeking assistance at 118 Jacy Place in Unity, the Waldo County Sheriff's Office said in a news release.

"The Forest Ranger had initially responded there to investigate illegally cut trees and was confronted by at least two gunshots being discharged, one of which in his direction," the sheriff's office said. "The Ranger was not struck by either shot and radioed for assistance."

A heavy police presence involving multiple law enforcement agencies lined Route 139 in response to the developing situation. By evening, a suspect connected with the incident had been taken into custody, and there was no danger to the public, a member of the Waldo County Sheriff's Office told NEWS CENTER Maine.

NEWS CENTER Maine sent crews to the area and reported seeing vehicles belonging to Maine Forest Service in addition to Waldo County Sheriff's Office and Maine State Police. A state police tactical vehicle was also spotted at the scene. The Waldo County Sheriff's Office said Maine Forest Service helicopters were also utilized.

About two dozen police and emergency vehicles were seen parked while officials responded to the area. The Maine State Police Crisis Negotiation Team responded to aid the Waldo County Sheriff's Office, according to Maine Department of Public Safety spokesperson Shannon Moss.

Emergency response vehicles were observed clearing the scene around 4 p.m.

The sheriff's office said 38-year-old Sharod D. Parker of Unity was arrested for alleged reckless conduct with a dangerous weapon (Class C) and was brought to Waldo County Jail.

A search warrant was reportedly obtained for the residence and evidence was collected by the Waldo County Sheriff's Office and the Maine Forest Service.

The investigation remains ongoing.
