Penobscot County sheriff's deputies responded to a home in the area of South Levant Road near Levant Elementary School around 10 a.m. for a domestic violence incident involving assault, Penobscot County Sheriff Troy Morton said.

The sheriff's office said in a news release the domestic violence incident "took place without the use of a weapon or threat of weapons."

A female victim was removed from the property and a male involved reportedly refused to cooperate with law enforcement, Morton said. During police negotiations, the male reportedly fired several rounds from the residence.

The suspect was identified as 34-year-old Nicholas Bennett of Levant.

Bennett was charged with domestic assault and brought to the Penobscot County Jail. Additional charges are expected.

No injuries were reported during the incident.

South Levant Road was closed as law enforcement responded and has since reopened. Levant Elementary School was notified of the incident.

"While this was near the school, the school was not in danger at any time," Morton said. Only a few homes in the area were immediately impacted.
