Maine treasure hunter abandons Cape Cod shipwreck salvage

Brooks and Michaud, of Framingham, Massachusetts, are the subjects of criminal investigations but neither has been charged.
Greg Brooks of Gorham, whose company was awarded salvage rights in 2008 to a World War II-era shipwreck off Cape Cod, believed there was $3 billion in treasure aboard the wreck. He has given up his salvage effort

PORTLAND, Maine (NEWS CENTER) -- A Maine man's odyssey to salvage a World War II-era shipwreck off of Cape Cod has ended after six years, according to the Portland Press Herald.

Sea Hunters, Greg Brook's company, wants to continue with the salvage project but according to a brief file from Marshall Tinkle, the attorney for Brooks, they do not have the necessary resources to do so.

Brooks initially claimed that the ship was carrying an estimated $3 billion worth of treasure when it sank in 1942.

The Portland Press Heard reports Tinkle has also filed a motion to withdraw as Sea Hunters' attorney because the company "has been unable for some time to comply with its agreement with counsel with respect to fees and expenses in this matter."

Brooks acknowledged in a court filing back in December that research documents submitted by his longtime partner, Edward Michaud, proving treasure was about the Port Nicholson had been faked.

Brooks however claims he had no prior knowledge of that fact.

Brooks and Michaud, of Framingham, Massachusetts, are the subjects of criminal investigations but neither has been charged.
