Support Maine nonprofits on 'Giving Tuesday,' while protecting your information

These nonprofits employ 1 in 6 workers in the state, benefiting over 100,000 individuals.

GORHAM, Maine — In the wake of Black Friday, Small Business Saturday, and Cyber Monday, there's Giving Tuesday.

Tuesday marks an opportunity to make a difference by supporting more than 7,000 nonprofits across the state of Maine.

The Maine Association of Nonprofits reveals a staggering statistic: these organizations employ 1 in 6 workers in the state, benefiting over 100,000 individuals.

Your donations can play a crucial role in sustaining and enhancing the lives of those supported by these nonprofits.

Kelly McCormack, development and marketing manager for the Maine Association of Nonprofits, emphasized the abundance of giving opportunities right in our own backyards.

"From major institutions like universities and hospitals to local PTAs and volunteer groups, Maine boasts a diverse array of nonprofits making a positive impact," McCormack said.

One organization that reaps the rewards of Giving Tuesday is the University of Southern Maine Athletics

Last year, they received $30,000 in donations from over 700 generous contributors.

USM athletic director Al Bean attests to the belief that these donations significantly contribute to the success of their 22 sports teams and 450 athletes, aiding in travel and equipment expenses.

While the spirit of giving is commendable, it's crucial to exercise caution when sharing personal information.

"If something feels suspicious, listen to that gut instinct of yours," McCormack advised. "Nonprofits will never call and ask you for your financial information."

As individuals across the state open their hearts and wallets to support nonprofits, it's essential to remember that nonprofits are obligated to have their mission, goals, and concrete criteria describing their achievements readily available on their websites. This transparency ensures that donors can make informed decisions about where their contributions are going.

As you consider your donations, remember to verify the legitimacy of the nonprofits you're donating to and embrace the true spirit of giving.
