FREEPORT, Maine — Maine State Police responded to an erratic vehicle traveling on Interstate 295 in the Freeport area that resulted in multiple secondary crashes with minor injuries on Monday.

Just after 4 p.m., the Augusta Regional Communications Center began receiving reports of an erratic vehicle headed northbound on I-295 in Freeport, according to a news release from Maine Department of Public Safety spokesperson Shannon Moss.

A state trooper who was north of the vehicle located a Chevy pickup truck near Exit 22 northbound and unsuccessfully attempted to stop it, then engaged in a pursuit, Moss said.

The vehicle eventually came to a stop north of Exit 28, and the driver was found to be an elderly male who was "suffering from a medical/mental health event."

Moss said, "An adverse driving report will be filed with the State Bureau of Motor Vehicles," as a result of the incident.

Traffic was backed up in the area of mile marker 28 due to the incident, and state police responded to two secondary crashes involving six vehicles resulting in minor injuries.

Moss said I-295 was reduced to one lane for roughly 35 minutes while crews attended the scene.

Brunswick Police and Fire Departments, Maine Department of Transportation, and Atlantic Coast and Copp Motors assisted at the scene, Moss said.
