Body found in Caribou is missing Washburn man, police say

Erik Foote, 39, went missing in January and a police officer in his hometown was accused of lying about the case.

CARIBOU, Maine — A body found in Caribou earlier this week has been identified as a missing Washburn man, police announced Thursday.

Erik Foote, 39, went missing Jan. 30. A Washburn police officer was charged with several crimes after authorities said he lied about picking up Foote and taking him to a hospital. Authorities said the officer actually dropped Foote off at a convenience store.

Community members had organized several searches for Foote. His body was found on the banks of the Aroostook River Tuesday. An autopsy is still pending, as officials investigate exactly how he died.

Foote was an Army veteran who suffered from post-traumatic stress disorder, his mother told The County.

"He would give up his coat or last dollar for anyone in need and did so many times," Foote's mother told The County. "He ... called everyone his friend."
