BANGOR, Maine — A Caribou man on Tuesday was sentenced to 13 years in prison for his role in a northern Maine drug ring.

James King, 54, was the 10th member of the ring to be sentenced. U.S. District Judge Lance Walker handed down the sentence, which includes five years supervised release.

King trafficked fentanyl and methamphetamine in Aroostook and Penobscot counties and elsewhere from 2018 to 2021, federal prosecutors said.

"King, an Aroostook County distributor, regularly obtained quantities of drugs from his source in the Bangor area," U.S. Attorney Darcie McElwee's office said in a statement Tuesday. "Others then would distribute the drugs to dealers who, in turn, would distribute the drugs to customers. King knowingly and intentionally joined and participated in the conspiracy."

One of the leaders of the ring, Danielle McBreairty, of Glenburn, was sentenced to 20 years in prison. Walker referred to her as a "profiteer of poison" and an "out of control missile" at her sentencing in 2022. Prosecutors said she conspired to distribute at least 400 grams of fentanyl and at least 500 grams of methamphetamine.

The following other ring members have been sentenced:

  • Matthew Catalano (37, Penobscot County) – 13 years
  • Andrew Adams (32, Aroostook County) – 10 years
  • Wayne Smith (33, Bangor) – 7 years
  • Thomas Hammond (25, Charleston) – 7 years
  • Blaine Footman (37, Bangor) – 5 years
  • Christopher Coty (43, Bangor) – 4 years
  • Nicole Footman (41, Holden) – 3 years
  • Dwight Gary, Jr. (53, Medway) – Time served

These people have pleaded guilty in connection with the ring:

  • Sarah McBreairty (35, Dixmont)
  • John Miller (23, Caribou)
  • Shelby Loring (28, Bangor)
  • Joshua Young (48, Presque Isle)
  • Joshua Jerrell (30, Orrington)
  • Carol Gordon (53, Bangor)
  • Jason Cunrod (42, Caribou)
