Bangor superintendent announces retirement

James Tager will have served three years as Bangor superintendent when he finishes the job.

BANGOR, Maine — James Tager, superintendent of the Bangor School Department, announced Friday that he will retire at the end of this school year.

Tager will have served three years as Bangor superintendent when he finishes the job on June 30. Prior to his time in Bangor, he was superintendent of schools for Franklin West Supervisory Union in Vermont. He was the superintendent of schools for Flagler Schools in Florida before that.

"Since the first day on the job as your superintendent, I embraced the challenges, history, and tradition that make up our district," Tager said Friday in a letter to the Bangor community. "There has been potential fulfilled and still yet potential to be realized. I have been privileged to play a role in the achievements and advancements made both in and out of our classrooms."

In an interview with NEWS CENTER Maine at the time he was hired in Bangor, Tager said he and his wife got married in Maine.

"I guess it's maybe sort of sentimental," Tager said at the time. "We were married in Deer Isle, my wife and I, and so we've always kind of had a heart for this part of the country."

In his letter Friday, Tager said it has been a pleasure and an honor to be a part of the Bangor School Department.

"I will especially cherish the memories of the children who shared their stories of what they were learning today, but also what they saw in their futures," Tager said. "I came here for the right reasons, and I think I’m leaving for the right reasons, but in between has been really good. I will always be grateful for the Bangor community."

Tager has a master of arts in administration and supervision from Nova Southeastern University and a bachelor of arts in elementary education and special education from Flagler College.
