Police issue warning about phone scams across Maine

Mainers are being urged to not give out personal information as multiple phone scams circulate across the state.

MAINE, USA — Police departments in Maine are warning about multiple scams circulating and are asking the public to stay vigilant.

Fort Fairfield police are warning the public of a scam where callers pretend to be from Spectrum and offer discounts on monthly bills for services such as phone, cable, and internet.

A caller reported the scam to the department after receiving fraudulent calls twice and confirmed with Spectrum their account details.

In York, police are warning of a scam where the caller is posing as York Police Chief Owen Davis and claiming the call recipient needs to resolve a legal matter.

The scam has been reported in Gorham, Kennebunk, Saco, and Augusta so far, the York Police Department said on Facebook.

Mainers are urged to never give out personal information, including a callback number, and to hang up when encountering a scam call. It's recommended to contact the referenced agency directly to verify the legitimacy of the call.
