FBI tracks social media threat to phone at Bangor High School

The Bangor Police Department said there was "no actual danger towards any student or faculty member," and the student in question is being cooperative.

BANGOR, Maine — Bangor police are investigating a threat of violence allegedly made Friday afternoon by a student at Bangor High School.

Bangor police received a call around 12:30 p.m. Friday from the FBI National Threat Operations Center, saying they detected a possible threat of violence directed toward Bangor High School and believed it came from a student, the department said in a news release.

After the threat was discovered on social media, the FBI used geolocation tools to track where the device was used to make the post, and it was apparently shared from Bangor High School. Officers and detectives were then dispatched to the school, according to the release.

Upon an initial investigation, law enforcement identified a student who they believed was responsible for making the threatening post, the release stated.

Police said there was “no actual danger towards any student or faculty." The student in question has been cooperative with detectives.

"Any potential criminal charges are pending," the release stated.

The investigation is ongoing.

No further information was available as of late Friday afternoon.
