ORIGINAL STORY:

State and Waterville Police are investigating the shooting of a 7-year-old girl that happened Friday afternoon, Maine Department of Public Safety Spokesman Steve McCausland said.

Emahleeah "Emah" Frost was shot while inside her home on Summer Street.

Her mother, Davina Petchonka, told NEWS CENTER Maine's Roslyn Flaherty that Emah was eating a snack when a bullet came through a window and struck the right side of her chest.

"I brought her out to the kitchen and said 'someone needs to call 911,'" Petchonka said. "I grabbed a towel to put pressure...the EMTs and everyone showed up pretty quickly."

Petchonka said on Saturday that her daughter is stable.

"She's handling it like a boss," Petchonka said. "She is doing so good."

In a press conference Saturday, Waterville Deputy Police Chief William Bonney said it was a drive-by shooting. He said they are working on multiple leads and it's unknown whether the family was targeted. The shooter's motive is under investigation.

"This is something we can't accept in your community," Bonney said. "I've been doing this job for 22 years and when a 7-year-old gets shot on your watch, that is a tragic thing."

Maine State Police said the young girl was taken by LifeFlight to Maine Medical Center from the Thayer Unit in Waterville.

Frost's family has set up a GoFundMe page for Emah. Click here if you would like to donate.
