Fetch ME a Home: Kitten season is here at Midcoast Humane

Our features this week are too young for adoption, but with more than 300 cats at the height of kitten season, Midcoast Humane is looking for foster families.

BRUNSWICK, Maine — It's kitten season at Midcoast Humane

Jess Townsend is the executive director for the shelter, which has locations at Brunswick and Edgecomb. Between those two locations and foster care, Townsend said they can have up to 300 cats in their care.

She brought in two 4-week-old kittens in to help showcase the need for foster families.

The shelter is looking for new foster families all the time to provide temporary homes for many animals, whether you're up for cats or dogs. Townsend said a soft crate is enough to keep in your home. The litter box goes right inside, along with some blankets and their food as they grow.

"By the time they start getting really adventurous is the time they start moving on," Townsend said. "Right about eight weeks is when they think, 'Hmm, I'm going to start climbing the curtains. Let's see what else is out there in the big wide world.' Best time to get adopted."

Coming in to adopt also helps clear their shelters so more animals in need of a home can move in.

You can stop in to visit an animal at the Brunswick location and fill out the adoption paperwork between 11 a.m. and 3 p.m. any day but Wednesday. If you're looking to adopt from Edgecomb, you'll need to fill out an application ahead of time and talk with a staff member. For either location, you can call at 207-449-1366 or email info@midcoasthumane.org.

If you'd like to help other than fostering, they're always accepting donations to help feed their animals.
