PORTLAND, Maine — It's April, it's spring, and it was a really mild winter ... but we're in Maine.
With a snowstorm on the horizon, we're all acutely aware that we're already in April. So, I chose to take a look at how often snowstorms have hit outside of winter, on April 1 or later.
Lets start in Bangor…
The top three snowstorms on record all happened within the first week of April, two of them since the year 2000. This makes sense because the beginning of the month should normally be the coldest part of the month, which means we have a higher likelihood of frozen precipitation.
Now looking at Portland …
We're seeing the same trend. Our top three snowstorms on record all happened within the first week of the month as well. Our highest amount saw more than 16 inches of snow, so it's not impossible to get huge snowstorms this late in the season.

Just for fun, I took a look at Portland's latest snowstorm on record. It took place on May 10 and 11 in 1945 and dropped 7 inches of snow in Portland.
Will either city break into the top three for an April snowstorm this week? It's not likely, but it's not completely out of the cards. This storm will be impactful either way.
