Although a relatively mild winter is expected, drawn-out cold snaps can happen any winter.

AUGUSTA, Maine — Rolling blackouts may hit New England if there’s an extended cold snap this winter.

The CEO of power grid operator ISO New England said the situation is “precarious” because natural gas is in shorter-than-normal supply and also subject to supply chain disruptions.

New England’s grid often operates near the limit during winter months, as homeowners using natural gas for heat clash with demand from plant operators who need gas to power the grid.

Although a relatively mild winter is expected, drawn-out cold snaps can happen any winter. And New England's grid operator says the failure of the Texas grid last winter has also helped put things in perspective.
