New info revealed in preliminary report on fatal Arundel plane crash

The National Transportation Safety Board released new information after an Oct. 5 plane crash killed two Mainers.

ARUNDEL, Maine — The National Transportation Safety Board has released new information related to an investigation into a fatal plane crash in Arundel on Oct. 5.

Eldon Morrison, 81, of Yarmouth was piloting the plane that left Biddeford in the morning, landed in Presque Isle, and was on its way back to Biddeford when it crashed. Paul Koziell, 55, of Scarborough was the lone passenger on board. Both men died in the crash.

Morrison founded CPM Constructors in Freeport, and Koziell was the company's current president.

The preliminary report released by the NTSB shows the plane was 200 feet below the "minimum descent altitude" during one segment of its approach to the runway.

Investigators looked at weather radar at the time of the crash and found it was "flying toward an area of light intensity echoes associated with light rain to drizzle and instrument meteorological conditions."

According to the report, one witness told investigators he didn't see the plane crash but felt the ground shake when it impacted. One witness in the report also said the plane's engine "didn't sound good."

The plane's initial impact point was in a tree about 40 feet above the ground. The report states the cockpit, cabin, area, and nearly all the empennages were on fire after the crash.

Morrison had flown that plane for more than 970 hours, the report stated.
