UMaine student hit by university vehicle on campus

​Emergency services responded to the scene, and the student was taken to a hospital, the university said in a release.

ORONO, Maine — A University of Maine student was hit by a university vehicle on campus Friday morning.

It happened shortly before 9:30 a.m. on Long Road, near Jenness Hall, the university said in a release.

Emergency services responded to the scene, and the student was taken to a local hospital with minor injuries, the release stated. The student was not identified.

The university vehicle involved was a Chevrolet Express van. It was being operated by a university employee, whose identity was not released.

The student's family has been notified, and an investigation is underway, according to the university.

"Our thoughts are with the student and their family," the school said in a statement.

The school announced that the road had reopened before 1:30 p.m. 

The school asked that any witnesses to the crash contact Lt. Noel Santiago at noel.santiago@maine.edu. University of Maine police and the Penobscot County Sheriff’s Office are investigating the crash.

Counseling services and support are available for students, faculty, or staff who may have been affected. The University of Maine said its Counseling Center can be reached at 207-581-1392. People can call the Dean of Students Office at 207-581-1406.
