Students turn trash into fashion, helping Maine 'go-green'

Aveda Institute Maine is hosting a "trashion show," its annual eco-friendly fashion show that helps reduce, reuse, and recycle.

AUGUSTA, Maine — The Aveda Institute Maine is once again showcasing its commitment to sustainability and creativity with its annual fashion show.

This event features students using their cosmetology skills and eco-friendly approach to highlight the importance of keeping Maine's water clean and protecting the environment.

Students at the Aveda Institute Maine eagerly anticipate the annual fashion show.

"We all look forward to any opportunity we get here to be as creative as possible," Kelley Fullagar, a student at the institute, said.

What makes this show unique is its focus on sustainability and environmental consciousness.

The students create designs using trash and repurposed materials.

"When thinking of the materials — it's trash — you just never know what's going to be available," Fullagar said.

Desiree Belanger, another student, shared her excitement about the event, "We whipped something up literally in one night, so it's not super extravagant, but it's pretty cool."

The idea behind the show is rooted in the Aveda brand's commitment to using biodegradable products.

"So many things don't have to be single-use items, and so many things in today's world are single-use items. Reduce, reuse, recycle — making things last longer than fast fashion wants them to be," Fullagar said.

Director of Education at the Aveda Institute Maine, Kerry Parker, highlighted their partnership with the Natural Resource Council of Maine.

"So far, this is our eighth year doing the fashion show, and we're in hopes to raise $30,000," Parker said.

Beth Comeau, the communications director from the Natural Resource Council of Maine, expressed her appreciation for the event and the partnership with the Aveda Institute Maine.

"It's just really nice to meet people who are like-minded and want to support our group and see the importance of what we do for Maine. This is my favorite event of the year; I love it," Comeau said.

The fashion show provides an opportunity for students to give back to the community while encouraging creative education and environmental awareness.

The excitement from participants was palpable as they described the show as akin to a grade school event.

"It's like a field trip day, like in school when you get to do something different. It's so exciting," Belanger said.

By incorporating sustainable practices into their designs, the students are making a positive impact on the community and the planet.
