Total solar eclipse: Here's how you can safely prepare for, and enjoy, the big event

Safety preparations don't end with eclipse glasses. Here's what you should know before heading out.

MAINE, USA — It's almost here: the Great American Eclipse over Maine on Monday.

Maine is positioned in one of the best spots in the country to watch the eclipse, as it's in the path of totality, and the latest forecast is looking promising with no cloud coverage.

An estimated 10,000 to 40,000 people will travel to Maine for the eclipse.

Last week during a press conference at the University of Maine's Versant Power Astronomy Center, Gov. Janet Mills urged both locals and those traveling to the state to view the eclipse to prepare early and use common sense.

Gov. Mills' office has put together an online resource with safety resources. Below are some of the governor's recommendations:

  • Wear ISO-certified eclipse glasses. Looking directly at the sun can cause permanent eye damage, and not just any glasses will provide the same protection. Do not drive while wearing eclipse glasses, and do not drive distracted during the eclipse.
  • Pack a physical map. The path of totality travels through many parts of rural Maine where cell phone reception may be sparse.
  • Don't get caught in the cold. Even though it's technically spring in Maine, it might not feel like it during the eclipse, as the temperature may drop by 10 degrees.
  • Who's hungry? If you don't pack any snacks or drinks, you might be. It's a good idea to pack some of your favorites just in case, with anticipated heavy traffic.
  • It's mud season. This means many dirt roads may be unpassable. It's advised to stay on paved roads at all times and to refrain from pulling off onto the shoulder of the road.
  • Many areas will be closed. Due to weather conditions and to protect Maine's natural areas, Maine State Park campgrounds, ATV trails, and Baxter State Park will be closed. Be sure to obtain landowner permission before attempting to access privately-owned lands.
  • Anticipate traffic. An estimated 10,000 to 40,000 will be traveling to Maine to see the eclipse. Make sure you have a full tank of gas, confirmed travel plans, and timely lodging accommodations.
