Hurricane season officially starts each year on June 1 and goes through November 30.
Of course, storms have no calendar and can happen before or after those dates.
The peak of hurricane season is in the second week of September.
The month of September has 34% of named storms, and August is close behind with 27% of named storms.
Storms have to be at least a tropical storm with sustained winds above 39 mph in order to be named.
Tropical depressions, or organized storms with winds below that criteria, do not get a name but are numbered, instead.
