Sen. Collins endorses Nikki Haley in Maine's Republican primary

Collins, a Republican, voted for Haley over former President Donald Trump in the primary. The endorsement comes ahead of Haley's scheduled visit to Portland.

MAINE, Maine — Republican presidential candidate Nikki Haley picked up a local endorsement ahead of her scheduled campaign stop in Maine.

Sen. Susan Collins, R-Maine, reportedly voted for Haley over former President Donald Trump in Maine's Republican primary, according to a statement. Collins said Haley's experience as former governor of South Carolina and her time as ambassador to the United Nations makes her "extremely well-qualified to serve as our first female president."

"She has the energy, intellect, and temperament that we need to lead our country in these very tumultuous times," the statement added.

Haley held a rally Sunday evening at the Portland Elks Lodge on Congress Street in Portland.

Sen. Lisa Murkowski, R-Alaska, also endorsed Haley ahead of Super Tuesday. Voters in Alaska, Maine and more than a dozen other states will cast ballots this Tuesday, when 865 Republican delegates will be up for grabs.

Haley remains the sole Republican challenger to Trump, who has been leading in all polls and has won all previous presidential primaries this year, including Haley's home state of South Carolina.
