Woodland Pulp union workers to begin strike this weekend

Two unions voted to strike this weekend and a third union is set to strike next week.

BAILEYVILLE, Maine — Workers at Baileyville's Woodland Pulp facility have announced they will be going on strike starting this weekend.

Union members from the International Association of Machinists and Aerospace Workers (IAM) Local 1490 began a strike just after midnight on Saturday, and Service Employees International Union Local 330-3 members are set to strike just after midnight on Sunday, according to a news release from the Maine AFL-CIO.

Workers with Millwrights Local 1121 will be conducting a strike starting next week.

Union workers voted overwhelmingly in favor of the strike, citing a recent proposal that would reclassify millwright, pipefitter, machinists, and auto mechanic positions as general workers, the release said.

IAM has reportedly filed unfair labor practice charges with the National Labor Relations Board against Woodland Pulp for alleged bad faith bargaining. Similar charges have already been filed previously, according to the release.

In December, workers voted to strike after rejecting a contract offer over wage and cost-of-living adjustments. A strike was avoided after an agreement was eventually reached.
