Three people who were involved in a crash in Rumford that claimed the life of a 9-year-old boy on Saturday remain hospitalized.

The crash happened at about 3:13 p.m. on Route 2 and involved a total of four people and two vehicles. A 9-year-old boy from Massachusetts who was in one of the vehicles during the crash was found unresponsive at the scene and later died at a hospital.

The three others involved in the crash were seriously injured and remain hospitalized as of early Monday afternoon, according to a Facebook post by the Rumford Police Department.

"As of [the] last report I received, the remaining three victims of the crash remain hospitalized with serious injuries, but are stable and are expected to survive," the post stated.

The crash remains under active investigation by Rumford police and the district attorney's office. The agencies are working to collect and review evidence, as well as conduct witness interviews, police said.

"No decision on criminal charges will be made until the investigation has been completed," the post said.

Police said no further details regarding the investigation are expected to be released until it has been completed.

"We ask the public and the media to keep speculation to a minimum as to the facts of this crash," the post said. "Please be patient while we meticulously do our job. Assumptions by those not directly involved tend to cause more harm than good. Regardless of who may be at fault and what charges may follow, let's remember that a lot of people are grieving right now, and adding to that grief with speculative accusations and assumptions is inappropriate and unnecessary."
