Scarborough man arrested following police stand-off

William Bowzer

SCARBOROUGH, Maine (NEWS CENTER) - - Scarborough police arrested a man following a standoff situation early Monday morning.

According to police, they arrested 56 year-old William L Bowser for allegedly assaulting two adult family members before locking himself in the house with minor children.

Police said they received a 9-1-1 call reporting a disturbance and assault at a residence in McIntyre Way, Scarborough.

Police said three children under the age of five-years-old were in the home with the suspect, as well as numerous firearms. They said due to these circumstances they exercised an abundance of caution in order to resolve the situation safely.

Officials said members of the Southern Maine regional SWAT team and crisis negotiators were unsuccessful in making contact with the suspect so police had to deploy two distraction devices outside the residence in order to make contact with Bowser.

Police obtained a search warrant to enter the residence when continued efforts to contact Bowser and the occupant of the house were unsuccessful, according to Scarborough Police Chief Robert Moulton,

Police Chief Robert Moulton said the resolution of this situation presented unusual challenges in that it immediately followed a second police stand-off in South Portland earlier Sunday evening and was further complicated by inclement weather.

Police Chief Moulton said Bowser has been transported to the Cumberland County Jail.
