Missing 61-year-old woman found dead, Gouldsboro police say

Police said the woman was last seen Wednesday night.

GOULDSBORO, Maine — A woman who was reported missing earlier in the week has been found dead.

A Silver Alert was issued Thursday for Lori Ann Read, 61, of Massachusetts.

Read was last seen around 7:30 p.m. Wednesday and was said to have experienced mental health issues, according to the initial release from the Maine Department of Public Safety.

Read was reportedly staying with her sister at an apartment on Grand Marsh Bay Road in Gouldsboro and left the residence sometime that night without her wallet or cellphone, likely on foot, Gouldsboro police said Friday in an update.

Police said her body was found around 2:30 p.m. Friday in a wooded area about a mile from the apartment.

An autopsy will be performed by the state medical examiner's office, which police said is standard protocol for cases like these.

"Our hearts and prayers go out to the family of Ms. Read during what has been a difficult situation for them," Gouldsboro police said in a news release.

Gouldsboro police thanked the community for their support during the search.

Gouldsboro police said they were aided in the search by the Maine Warden Service, Maine Marine Patrol, Schoodic EMS, Gouldsboro Fire Department, and the Civil Air Patrol.

Editor's note: An earlier version of this story misstated the woman's condition.
