Shapleigh man arrested after recklessly firing AK-47

*UPDATE* – No bail is being allowed for Ferrera, according to the York County Sheriff's Office.

SHAPLEIGH, Maine (NEWS CENTER) — A man from Shapleigh was arrested by police Sunday afternoon after allegedly firing his AK-47 semi-automatic rifle in a reckless manner.

Robert Ferrera, 26, was charged with Class C reckless conduct with a dangerous weapon and Class E violating conditions of release, according to the York County Sheriff's Office.

Deputies were summoned to Oak Hill Road around 4:30 p.m. for an "out of control" man and later learned Ferrera, who was upset over a living situation, had been shooting his weapon randomly inside and outside of his house.

The sheriff's office said a family member of Ferrara who lives nearby fled his residence when he heard Ferrara begin firing his weapon and summoned authorities.

Upon arrival, authorities said Ferrara, a former Army Ranger, emerged from his residence several times with a weapon and binoculars, "almost appearing to be 'looking' for the deputies."

About an hour later, Ferrera left his residence and started walking toward a tree line where he was confronted by two deputies covertly hidden in the woods. The suspect surrendered peacefully.

The sheriff's office said an investigation revealed Ferrara fired his weapons around 15 to 20 times.

Ferrera's bail is set at $500 cash and he is expected to be arraigned Monday.
