Norwegian man arrested in connection with threat to Portland Police officers

 Portland Police say they have arrested one man from Norway in connection with the email threats to Portland Police officers.

PORTLAND, Maine (NEWS CENTER) -- Portland Police say they have arrested one man from Norway in connection with the email threats to Portland Police officers.

Espen Brungodt, 28 entered the United States on July 26 with family members. Police say on Wednesday morning, Brungodt sent an email to Portland Police officials and local media, saying he would attack officers using explosives and high powered rifles.

In response to the threats, Portland Police increased security around the station and Cumberland County Courthouse parking garage. The courthouse was later closed when an investigation revealed the suspect was likely in the area.

Brungodt was arrested at the Residence Inn on Fore Street in Portland at 1 pm on Wednesday. Police say he was not armed and did not resist arrest. Brungodt is being held at the Cumberland County Jail and is facing federal charges of transmitting threatening communications.

Police say they do not believe his family was aware of his actions.

The FBI and Department of Homeland Security aided in the investigation.
