Snow could mean a tow: Portland locals are sick of parking bans with no alternatives

City officials said they have towed 160 cars so far this winter. The fee to collect your vehicle is $135.

PORTLAND, Maine — When snow blankets many cities across the state, a common occurrence includes parking bans.

In Portland, a city with a growing population, some residents are voicing concerns about the need for additional parking options during these bans.

The City of Portland boasts a text and email alert system for snow bans, with 28,000 people receiving notifications.

However, the increasing number of cars compared to available parking spaces has left many Mainers feeling frustrated.

"There's certainly way more cars than there are spots," Kelly Sawyer, a Portland local said.

Finding parking during parking bans has become chaotic for many.

"Everywhere I go is just flooded already," Brandon Collins, another Portland resident said.

The City of Portland said that parking bans typically run from 10 p.m. - 7 a.m.

They offer multiple lots and two city-owned garages as alternatives.

Jessica Grondin, the spokesperson for the city, encourages people to use garages, emphasizing the convenience of a flat rate and avoiding the hassle of clearing snow off cars in the morning.

Last winter, the city added an additional parking lot to address the issue.

Residents who manage to secure street parking during snow bans feel fortunate.

"It feels like you struck gold when you get a parking spot here [on the Western Prom]," Kelly Sawyer, a Portland resident said.

On the other hand, those less fortunate contemplate parking their cars far away and walking home to avoid towing.

“I have to change my whole life schedule to make it happen. My fiancé is at home pregnant with twins and I can't park in front of my house, so it's very stressful. I wish there was some solutions," Max Weinrich, another Portland local said.

If you are towed, the towing fee is $135.

“I think the last storm we had about 60 cars towed, this storm we had over 100, which we do not like to do," Grondin said.

To alleviate parking stress, the city suggests avoiding street parking altogether and opting for one of the two city-owned garages, where a flat rate of three $3 is offered during snow parking bans.

As Portland continues to grapple with a surge in population and the challenges posed by snow bans, finding a balance between the demand for parking and available spaces remains a priority.
