Police: West Enfield woman dies following Scarborough crash

Police say the driver hit a rock and utility pole on Payne Road after allegedly striking a vehicle on I-95.

SCARBOROUGH, Maine — A West Enfield woman has died after hitting a rock and utility pole in Scarborough after allegedly striking a vehicle on Interstate 95.

Just after 12:15 p.m. Saturday, a caller reported they had been struck by a vehicle on I-95 that continued southbound at a high rate of speed, according to a news release from the Scarborough Police Department.

The caller reported the suspect vehicle got off on Exit 42, hit the guardrail multiple times, and turned right onto Payne Road, police said. The vehicle reportedly went off the road, struck a rock and utility pole, then stopped.

Police said the single female occupant of the suspect vehicle was pronounced deceased at the scene.

In an updated release Monday, officials said the Office of Chief Medical Examiner has identified the woman as 40-year-old Sarah Harford, of West Enfield.

The investigation into the crash remains ongoing.

"Scarborough Police were assisted by Scarborough Fire/EMS. Cumberland County Sheriff's Office and Maine State Police are reconstructing the crash," police said.

Editor's note: A previous version of this story said the person who died in the crash was a woman from Louisiana. However, that was a separate crash that occurred near the same road on the following day.
