Original Stephen King manuscripts damaged in downtown flooding

A water main break disrupted business in downtown Bangor. Some are facing lost inventory due to flooding.

BANGOR (NEWS CENTER Maine) -- A water main break in downtown Bangor has caused thousands of dollars worth of damage and destroyed original manuscripts and rare editions written by legendary Maine horror writer Stephen King.

The books were kept at Gerald Winters and Son bookstore on Main Street. Winters, the bookstore owner, says Tuesday was a "bad day."

He says he heard water running sometime after 7 a.m. and when he went into the store's basement, water rose to about eight feet, almost completely up the stairs.

Winters believes he lost much of his inventory due to the flooding.

"I haven't even gotten into the basement to see what's down there because the water is still coming in," Winters said.

Kathy Moriarty, General Manager of the Bangor Water District says the cold weather caused part of the fire service to break at one of the buildings on Main Street. That issue was resolved around 2:30 p.m. and water was restored to most places around that time.

Still some businesses remained closed Tuesday even after the leak was found.
