No surprise as King announces run for Senate re-election

Important issues on which to work and the need for bipartisanship are the reasons why Sen. Angus King says he is running for re-election

BRUNSWICK (NEWS CENTER Maine) — A large crowd of Angus King backers gathered in Brunswick as the incumbent Maine Senator broke the news that wasn’t really news. He is running for another term in the U.S. Senate.

King made the official announcement Thursday morning in Brunswick to a crowd of about 150 friends and supporters.

King said he originally ran as an independent to try to help bridge the divide between the parties in Congress. King has made friends on both sides of the political aisle and says he believes there are small signs of bipartisanship starting to appear.

Important issues on which to work and the need for bipartisanship are the reasons why King says he is running for re-election.

“This is not a time to walk away from the U.S. government. This is a time where we need to try to continue to talk to people, to maintain civil discourse, to try to solve problems and try to sort of calm some the rhetoric that passes for political discourse in this country.”

Sen. King has opponents in both parties; Republican State Sen. Eric Brakey is challenging King along with Democrat Zak Ringlestein.

King has served as a United States Senator from Maine since 2013. The former attorney has been an independent since 1993 and served as Maine’s 72nd Governor.
