Man on run from police jumps into stream, disappears

Bangor rescue swimmers were deployed but the man has not been seen since re-entering the water.

BANGOR (NEWS CENTER Maine) — A man from Bangor is missing after fleeing from police on foot and jumping into a stream.

Bangor police responded early Friday morning to reports of an altercation in the parking lot of a strip club on Harlow Street.

Police said 22-year-old Peter Manuel, who had reportedly been involved in the altercation, took off running before officers could interview him. He jumped a fence near the federal courthouse building, entered the Kenduskeag Stream and began to cross the body of water.

Later, officers found Manuel out of the water standing at the foot of a steep embankment. Police said officers repeatedly tossed rescue lines to him, but he refused assistance and jumped back into the stream.

Rescue swimmers were deployed but officers lost sight of Manuel and he has not been seen since.

Police said it's unclear why Manuel jumped back into the stream.

In addition to the Bangor Police Department, the Bangor Fire Department, Maine Warden Service and Maine Marine Patrol have been notified and are assisting in rescue efforts.
