BOSTON — President Joe Biden on Thursday nominated a Maine judge to serve on the Boston-based First Circuit Court of Appeals.

Julia Lipez, 43, is a justice on the Maine Superior Court and served as an assistant U.S. attorney for Maine for 11 years. The First Circuit includes Maine, New Hampshire, Massachusetts, Rhode Island, and Puerto Rico.

Lipez is "extraordinarily qualified, experienced, and devoted to the rule of law and our Constitution," the White House said in a statement.

Lipez was among Biden's 50th round of nominees for federal judicial positions, bringing the number of announced federal judicial nominees to 244.

"These choices also continue to fulfill the President’s promise to ensure that the nation’s courts reflect the diversity that is one of our greatest assets as a country—both in terms of personal and professional backgrounds," the White House's statement said.

Lipez served as appellate chief with the U.S. Attorney's Office for Maine from 2019 to 2022. Prior to working for the office, she was an associate and then a senior associate at Wilmer Cutler Pickering Hale and Dorr LLP in New York from 2007 to 2011. She served as a law clerk for Judge Diana Gribbon Motz on the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Fourth Circuit from 2006 to 2007. She earned a law degree from Stanford Law School in 2006 and a bachelor's degree from Amherst College in 2002.
