PORTLAND (NEWS CENTER Maine) -- A popular on-demand food delivery app announced Monday they are expanding their services to Portland.
A GrubHub Delivery spokesperson said the expansion is part of the company's plan to grow their network to more than 100 new markets this year.
"Previously, Portland restaurants on Grubhub supplied their own couriers to deliver through the platform," the company said in a press release, "but now Grubhub Delivery makes it possible for all restaurants to take advantage of delivery to expand their customer base by providing Grubhub drivers that can deliver from any local establishment."
Portland residents previously relied on 2DineIn, a locally operated on-demand food delivery app. It was the only such app in the Portland area until Grubhub's expansion.
"Initial thoughts," said 2DineIn owner Mike Bolduc, "I mean, hey, we're no longer one of the only people doing this in Portland which is kind of scary at first. But we're really viewing it as an opportunity."
Bolduc says he's excited about the exposure to food delivery services Grubhub will bring.
"I'd be naive to think every single person knows who 2DineIn is. Hopefully they can help get some of the word out and in turn, we'll actually see our business increase."
Business for 2DineIn has been strong, especially over the past year. They currently serve one out of every three households in the Portland market and have 500-700 new customers each month.
Some restaurants that will partake in Grubhub delivery services include Mi Sen Noodle Bar, The 5 Spot, and Flatbread Company Portland. Grubhub says customers will be able to order from more than 50 local restaurants.
Grubhub doesn't have any immediate plans to expand in markets like Bangor or Augusta, but Bolduc says it's not off the table for 2DineIn. For now, they're hoping to deliver in Westbrook as a next step.
