Blue lobster found in Portland Harbor a rare beauty

A local lobsterman dropped off a rare blue lobster with his daily haul at Free Range Fish & Lobster on Commercial Street on Thursday.

PORTLAND, Maine — Workers at Free Range Fish & Lobster were delighted when a local lobsterman brought in a rare blue lobster to the Commercial Street store in Portland on Thursday afternoon.

Fish market worker Vince Carbajal said the lobster caught by Shawn Kaside, is like a “jewel.” Blue lobsters are one in 2 million, Carbajal said. Having worked at the market for three years, he said he’s seen thousands upon thousands of lobsters, some with different coloring, but nothing as vibrant as this little critter.

"Most of the other colors are a lot of calicos, and a lot of di-colored ones, so it would be like regular color and then yellow on the other half and we get a lot of blue-tinged ones around the joints, but nothing this shocking," Carbajal said.

What will become of Jewel?

Carbajal assured the blue lobster would be kept safe at the market until they sent him to the Gulf of Maine Research Institute down the street. He said they always send their endangered lobsters to the institute to help protect them.
