Police bike auction raises funds for community

The Bangor Police Department held their annual bike auction Saturday afternoon at the Bangor Parks and Recreation Department where more than fifty bikes were sold, auction-style.

BANGOR (NEWS CENTER Maine) -- Going once, going twice, sold to the highest bidder!

The Bangor Police Department held their annual bike auction Saturday afternoon at the Bangor Parks and Recreation Department where more than fifty bikes were sold, auction-style.

This bike auction is held once a year as the weather gets warmer and folks may be looking for a new summer bicycle.

The bikes are acquired by the police department and are held for one year before they are able to be sold at the auction.

All of the proceeds from the bike auction go to the Community Relations Fund, and is invested right back into the community.

"Basically, we bring it right back into the community," says Community Relations Officer Daniel Gastia. "Anything that we do from scam awareness presentations, stickers for children, or what have you, and then when we do job fairs, so the money goes right back into the community and stays right in the city."

As of Saturday afternoon, the total amount raised hadn't been calculated, but Gastia estimates the department raised approximately two-hundred dollars from Saturday's auction.
