Two displaced by house fire in Waterville

Crews from four nearby communities responded to help the Waterville Fire Department extinguish the blaze.

WATERVILLE, Maine — Two people have been displaced after a fire Saturday damaged the single-family home in Waterville where they were living.

Crews with the Waterville Fire Department responded to a call made around 10:20 a.m. about a fire at a home on Oakland Street.

Smoke and fire were visible from the second floor of the home when crews arrived at the scene, Chief John Gromek said Saturday evening in a news release.

Firefighters were able to keep the fire contained in a second-floor bedroom, but smoke and heat damage were apparent in the second upstairs bedroom, and the first floor was damaged by water crews used to put out the fire, according to the release.

The fire was extinguished by 10:52 a.m., about 30 minutes after the call to emergency officials was made.

The people at the residence were able to get out of the house safely before the fire department arrived, and no injuries were reported, the department said.

About 40 firefighters were at the scene, including fire crews from four nearby communities: Winslow, Fairfield, Oakland, and Skowhegan.

The fire is under investigation by the Maine state fire marshal's office.
