Investigation into student ongoing after 'lock-in' at Augusta high school lifts

School officials and the school resource officer received "concerning information" that a student may have had a weapon in the school early Thursday afternoon.

AUGUSTA, Maine — Shortly after 11 a.m. Thursday, school officials and the school resource officer at Cony High School in Augusta received "concerning information" that a student may have had a weapon in the school around the early afternoon, a joint release from Augusta police and Augusta schools administration said.

School officials and the school resource officer at the high school quickly started to investigate the information, according to the release.

"The student involved was quickly contained, and the decision was made to go into a 'lock-in' protocol because the concern could not be quickly invalidated," the release stated.

Augusta police then responded to the high school to help mitigate safety concerns, and it was considered safe to dismiss students from school with an increased police presence.

"After-school activities were canceled out of an abundance of caution," the release said. "It is our plan to resume regular school activities tomorrow with an increased police presence."

Augusta police ask anyone who may have information regarding the whereabouts or identity of the person or persons involved in this incident to contact the Augusta Police Department Criminal Investigations Bureau at 207-626-2370, ex. 3418.

This incident remains under investigation.
