Don Carrigan honored with Gold Circle Award, marking 50 years of broadcasting in Maine

Carrigan was honored at a ceremony in Boston in early December.

PORTLAND, Maine — This is a bit uncomfortable because I have to write about myself.

A few weeks ago, I was honored with the Gold Circle Award from the New England chapter of NATAS—the National Academy of Television Arts and Science. Those are the people who bestow the annual Emmy awards. The Gold Circle marks 50 years of a successful career in television.

I was amazed to be chosen for the award, and grateful to my good friend Pat Callaghan for nominating me. Pat, by the way, had already been chosen for the Silver Circle award, marking his 40 years in the business. He’s a few years younger than me, and he had a fantastic career before retiring in 2022.

I am exceptionally lucky to have been able to work for so long in Maine broadcasting. Lucky to have gotten hired at all, back in 1973, and lucky that my employers and our viewers have continued to value my reporting and storytelling. I love what I do, and I hope to keep doing it a little longer. There are so many good stories out there, waiting to be told.

Anyway, as part of the Gold Circle award, I had to produce a video, reflecting on my career. It's been fun to reflect on all those stories and people. If you want to get a sense of where I’ve been for a half-century, take a look and listen.

And thanks for trusting me to share your stories and lives for so long.
