World-class robotics team visits Maine island school

Some members of the team are from remote parts of Maine themselves, and wanted to share technology not always available to rural schools.

NORTH HAVEN, Maine — Some members of a world-class robotics team come from pretty remote parts of Maine where advanced science opportunities can be hard to come by.

So, they got the idea to hop on a boat and share their experiences with other rural students.

Members of the Outliers robotics team brought their robot, "Sophie," to the North Haven Community School located off the Rockland coastline on Monday.

Outliers placed near the top of a 650-team field at a world competition the previous April.

Once they arrived after an hour-long ferry ride, the team members talked about robotics with whoever wanted to listen in the K-12 school. Outliers member Isabella grew up on Matinicus Island and hoped to be an example to other islanders.

"I hope that they learn to follow their passion and do whatever they want to do," she said. "Because nothing can stop them if they try hard enough."

The cultural exchange did not just go one way. North Haven has its own makerspace, complete with a 3D printer, greenhouse, and a partially restored 100-year-old boat.
