Police: Weapons seized from vehicle of shooting suspect during arrest in Standish

Deputies said the man's vehicle matched the description of a shooting suspect from the day before.

STANDISH, Maine — A shooting suspect is facing several charges after creating a police standoff late Friday night.

At about 11 p.m., Cumberland County sheriff's deputies responded to a report a homeowner made about a Jeep that had parked in her driveway and turned off its lights on Oak Hill Road in Standish, the sheriff's office said in a news release.

Deputies said the vehicle matched the description of a shooting suspect from the day before. When they arrived at the scene, they located 52-year-old Aaron Difillipo who was "highly uncooperative" near the Jeep.

Difillipo reportedly refused to comply with the commands that deputies were giving him.

"Aaron eventually got back in his Jeep and began consuming a large quantity of pills from a bottle of pills and using what appeared to be an alcoholic beverage to aid him in swallowing the pills," the release said.

Deputies continued to give commands to exit the vehicle, but Difillipo put the Jeep in drive, drove through a ditch around several law enforcement vehicles and spike strips, and then took off.

"I've lived in Standish my entire life, and I've never experienced anything like this," one resident told NEWS CENTER Maine, who wanted to remain anonymous. "I've never been so scared in my entire life."

Deputies then tried to catch up to Difillipo, but he drove down a side road out of sight and eluded immediate capture, according to the release.

"Deputies canvassed the area but were unable to locate Aaron," the release stated. "After most units had cleared the scene, a CCSO K-9 Deputy located the suspect vehicle on Route 113 and again attempted to stop it. Difillipo again refused to stop, and a pursuit ensued."

Difillipo continued driving on Route 113 and turned onto Route 5/117 into the town of Cornish. Maine State Police took over the pursuit and conducted a PIT maneuver, disrupting the pursuit. State troopers were then able to take Difillipo into custody.

Residents explain that after what appeared to be the suspect returning two days in a row, they feel as though law enforcement didn't take their concerns seriously after alerting officials Thursday. They also wonder if the situation could have been handled better.

"How did he get right under your nose? How did he literally pull in, right under your nose?" another anonymous resident said.

During the arrest, a Cumberland County sheriff's deputy encountered "puncture wounds on his arm" from a K-9 with the sheriff's office. He was treated and released from Maine Medical Center with minor injuries.

Upon arrest, Difillipo appeared to be highly intoxicated and was taken to the Cumberland County Jail.

Deputies seized 30 shell casings, liquor, and a crossbow from the Jeep. The sheriff's office's Criminal Investigation Division investigated the scene and secured a warrant for Difillipo's home, according to the release.

Difillipo is being held on charges of operating under the influence, criminal threatening with danger, illegal possession of a firearm, obstructing government administration, eluding an officer, criminal mischief, aggravated reckless conduct, and refusing to submit to arrest.

No additional details were released.
