Three relatives face charges in a Bangor homicide investigation concerning a child who died from life-threatening injuries at a local hospital on Feb. 18.

According to a news release from the Bangor Police Department, a 10-year-old child from Bangor was brought to a local hospital with life-threatening injuries the morning of Feb. 18 and died from their injuries later that night despite measures taken by the hospital.

The hospital reportedly notified the Maine Department of Health and Human Services shortly after the child arrived, and detectives and a caseworker were called to investigate the incident.

Following a post-mortem examination by the Office of Chief Medical Examiner, the child's manner of death was determined to be a homicide.

Three arrest warrants for depraved indifference murder were obtained by Bangor Police Department detectives, and three relatives from Bangor of the 10-year-old child now face charges: 33-year-old father Joshua Smith, 35-year-old mother Jem Bean, and 56-year-old paternal grandmother Mistie Latourette, Bangor police said.

Smith, Bean, and Latourette were brought to the Penobscot County Jail, according to the release. Their first court appearance is scheduled for 1 p.m. Friday, and while defendants appear via Zoom, everyone else must be there in person.

The investigation is ongoing.
